VMWareFAQ

How does VMWare work?

VMWare slices up a high-performance server into several entirely separate entities, or virtual machines, running on a base OS. These virtual machines act completely independent of one another, and can be different from the base OS and each other. Should one virtual machine crash, it has no effect on the other instances. Each virtual machine has its own private memory, disk space, network space, and operating system.

Why is VMWare better than VPS?

With VMWare, your resources are truly yours, that's why it's called a virtual DEDICATED server (VDS) instead of VPS. There's no sharing--the slice you get is yours exclusively.

Unlike VPS systems like Virtuozzo, which operate at the software level, VMWare operates at the HARDWARE LEVEL by conducting a full hardware emulation, for a truly isolated, stable and secure environment with higher performance. In addition, you can install any OS on a VMWare machine.

How do I control my virtual server?

You are given full, "true" root access to you server. You can use Windows Remote Desktop if you have Windows OS installed or use SSH if you have Linux OS installed.

Can I reboot my machine?

Yes, you can reboot your virtual server whenever and as often as the need arises. This will have no effect on any other clients.

How many others will I share the server with?

We are very conservative when it comes to determining whether another client can be successfully added to a machine, especially when compared to other providers. We will first take a look at current cpu usage, i/o times, and swap activity. The exact number of clients on a system varies, since some users receive more traffic than others. But in short, absolutely no more than 4 clients ever share a machine, which is very likely the best ratio in the industry. Which is another reason why our virtual servers will outperform anyone else's.

If you are connecting from a Windows-based machine, you'll want to use an ssh client like PuTTY. PuTTY.exe is a free download available at: Chiark
